The UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Practice is more than a professional framework; it’s the heart of safe, compassionate, and evidence-based nursing. For those preparing for the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), understanding and applying the Code is essential. Examiners assess not only your clinical competence but also how your behaviour and communication reflect these principles.
The NMC Code is structured around four key standards, and each one is closely tied to what examiners expect to see during your OSCE performance.
Putting People First
Every nurse must place patients and the public at the centre of care, showing respect, dignity, and empathy in all interactions. Example: In a wound dressing station, you close the curtain, greet the patient by name, explain what you are about to do, and check their comfort and pain level before beginning. This simple act demonstrates patient-centred care in action.
Delivering Safe and Effective Practice
Good nursing depends on evidence-based decisions, competence, and clear communication with colleagues. Example: During a medication administration station, you follow the five rights—right patient, drug, dose, route, and time. You document promptly and clarify any unclear prescriptions. This shows your ability to think critically and maintain safety.
Safeguarding Patients and Preventing Harm
Nurses must recognise risks early and take swift action to protect patients. Example: While recording vital signs, you notice a high blood pressure reading. You repeat the measurement to confirm accuracy and then use the SBAR framework to escalate your concern. This proactive response reflects sound clinical judgement and accountability.
Upholding Professional Standards and Trust
Integrity and transparency define professional nursing behaviour. Example: If you accidentally drop a sterile swab during catheterisation, you dispose of it, inform the patient, and replace it immediately. Such honesty shows accountability and builds trust.
What Examiners Value Most
OSCE examiners look for patient-centred communication, strong clinical reasoning, consistent safety checks, and visible professionalism. Every greeting, hand wash, and documentation step demonstrates your understanding of the NMC Code.
